The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Chiropractic Adjustments: What is it?
Part I: What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
What’s this buzz about chiropractic adjustment? Why are people using it? How does it work? In the United States, a person’s health is largely tied to their drug use. But, apart from their recuperative qualities, drugs can also do great and irreversible harm to a person’s health; just listen to the endless lists of possible side effects at the end of their commercials….
Here’s where chiropractic adjustments come in. These operate on the “radical” notion that the human body can heal itself with proper guidance. Every day, our bodies are subjected to stress like prolonged, unnatural sitting and physical labor. These can misalign our spine and joints, known as “vertebral subluxation,” which can lead to immune deficiencies. Professional chiropractors work to correct those misalignments to influence the nervous system and overall health of the patient. Proper manipulation of other body parts like legs and bones have also consistently proven to alleviate pain in those areas and strengthen the health of many patients. Most people concerned with back pain, for example, choose chiropractic treatments over others; over the last two decades, chiropractors have gotten a 110% increase in patients.
What Happens in a Visit?
During a routine visit, the chiropractor will apply pressure to a patient’s joints and spine to relax and adjust them into their proper positions using their hands or special tools. Many patients report feeling calm and relaxed after an adjustment session; others report improvements in mobility. A “popping” sound is standard during a session – the release of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide that open the joint and restore its movements and nerve functions.
But How Does It Work?
But isn’t chiropractic adjustment pseudoscience? Nothing could be further from the truth. Many chiropractic programs are built on four-year ventures combining classwork and direct experience and require one year of Ph.D. training. Research has shown that chiropractic adjustments can alleviate and treat back pain and headaches; the New Zealand government concluded that adjustments are “remarkably safe.” Chiropractic adjustments are even administered to newborns to correct damage caused from birth. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever increases risk damage 100 times.
By adjusting the body to its optimal state, chiropractors treat patients without any harmful chemicals or drugs. The less intrusion into your body through drugs, the better the outcome for the patient.
