Should You See a Chiropractor for a Slipped Disc?

Chiropractic Care For Slipped Discs

Have you been diagnosed with a slipped disc? Wondering what treatments work best for disc problems? Worried that chiropractic adjustments might worsen (instead of improving) your situation? Read on to learn how a skilled chiropractor can help speed recovery and improve your spinal health.

What is a Slipped Disc?

Your spine consists of a series of bones (vertebrae) stacked one on top of each other, forming your spinal column. The vertebrae in your spinal column are often discussed in terms of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. There are seven vertebrae in the cervical spine (neck), twelve in the thoracic spine (middle of your back), and five in the lumbar spine (lower back – connecting to the sacrum and coccyx). Each of these vertebrae has cushioning between them – discs that act as shock absorbers. They protect the vertebrae from the stress produced by everyday activities such as walking, jumping, reaching, lifting, twisting, and any sort of jarring movements.

The cushioning (discs) are soft and gelatinous on the inside and protected by a tough outer ring. If that tough outer ring is damaged and the tender inner part of the disc becomes exposed, it is referred to as a slipped or herniated disc. If that disc presses on one of your spinal nerves, you’ll experience pain and/or numbness.

A slipped disc can happen anywhere along your spinal column, but a slipped disc in the lower back is the most common. Once you have a slipped disc, you will experience pain or numbness, unexplained muscle weakness, or tingling sensations.

How Are Slipped Discs Treated?

In most cases, treatment is determined by how much pain you are experiencing and how much the disc has slipped. In many cases, pain relievers, simple chiropractic adjustments, and an exercise program aimed at strengthening the surrounding back muscles can solve the problem. Chiropractic adjustments are a safe, effective, and non-invasive treatment solution. The vertebrae are properly aligned, the muscles in the back begin to support the vertebrae properly, and the injury heals. However, if extensive damage has already been done, it may be necessary to undergo surgery to repair the slipped disc before proper healing can happen.
