How to Prevent Herniated Discs (AKA Bulging Discs)
Natural Treatment for Herniated Discs (AKA Bulging Discs)
Wondering how to prevent back pain? Learn from a Huntersville chiropractor that treats herniated discs.
Your spine is comprised of a series of stacked bones called vertebrae. Between the vertebrae flat, round cushioning pads (also called intervertebral discs) act as shock absorbers, protecting the vertebrae from damage. These shock absorbers and soft on the inside and tough on the outside.
A herniated disc — also called a slipped disc, bulging disc or ruptured disc — occurs when the tough outer sheath bursts and some of the soft gel inside the disc is pressed out of its protective covering. This disruption of the shock absorbers causes pressure on the nerves near the disc, which is why a herniated disc can be very painful.
Herniated Disc Symptoms
Some herniated discs are asymptomatic, meaning you might not know you have a bulging disc. However, it is common to experience the following symptoms:
- Sciatica pain, which is pain that radiates to the buttocks, legs, and feet
- Tingling or numbness in the legs or feet
- Muscle weakness
- Pain near or over the shoulder blade
- Pain that radiates to the shoulder, arm, hand and fingers
- Neck pain and neck muscle spasms
Herniated Disc Risk Factors
Discs rupture when the outer sheath of the disc is weakened or tears. This usually happens because of:
- Aging
- Degeneration
- Obesity
- A sudden strain (this is often caused by improper lifting techniques or from twisting violently)
