The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Acupuncture Part III: Scientific Support of Acupuncture

It’s one thing to understand the history of acupuncture, and of course it’s important to understand what acupuncture is and isn’t. Still, the real question most people have is: does acupuncture actually work? Explore scientific support of acupuncture for specific conditions here.

Yes, Acupuncture Works.

No, it does not cure everything, and acupuncture will not replace eating right and living right. For example, you can’t expect to lose weight just because you get acupuncture treatments if you don’t also change your eating and exercise. However, acupuncture will reduce cravings, helping you lose weight. Acupuncture, on it’s own, won’t cure you of migraines, but it will provide a degree of pain relief.

Acupuncture is typically used as a complementary medical treatment alongside chiropractic adjustments (to get the body properly aligned, removing excess pressure on nerves) and holistic medical advice regarding lifestyle (diet, exercise, sleep, herbal supplements). In many cases, such as for cancer patients, acupuncture is used to relieve stress and reduce pain, plus to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself, supplementing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Scientific Support that Acupuncture Works

The following are just a few conditions scientists have studied and determined acupuncture is effective for:

  • Pain relief. Acupuncture has been proven to be extremely effective for pain relief. Read about 29 studies about acupuncture for pain relief, all of which point to the efficacy of acupuncture for this purpose.
  • Healing from injury. A recent study examined the efficacy of acupuncture for recovery from ankle injuries. Researchers from the Nanning Hospital of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) conducted the study, treating the study participants (120 who had injured their ankles) with KD10 and Ashi acupoints.
  • Recovery or tennis elbow. When doctors at the Mayo Clinic used acupuncture to treat 22 people with chronic tennis elbow, 80% got complete and lasting relief.
  • Neurological disorders. Read a medical paper exploring the effects of acupuncture on neurological conditions such as tremors.
  • Colic and other causes of discomfort for infants. Read studies that analyze the efficacy and saftey of acupuncture for fussy babies.
