Travel Tips to Protect Your Posture

Travel Tips to Protect Your Posture

Many people can agree on the uncomfort traveling can cause, especially over long distances. Being cooped up in a car, plane, or whatever else for extended periods of time can greatly contribute to back and neck pain and overall poor back health. Keep reading if you want to find out how you can prevent bad posture while traveling and learn ways to correct damage done by traveling.

Travel Light

Lugging around heavy suitcases and picking up large items is going to wear on your muscles. Choosing to skip on that “just incase” pair of shoes might be a good option if you know you’re carrying your stuff for long periods of time. Stop to take breaks when carrying luggage if you need to, but make sure to lift heavy things with your legs to prevent straining on your back.

Move Around

Sitting for a long period of time in one position stiffens the back muscles and reduced circulation and blood flow, which can have very bad consequences. It is a good idea to get out of your seat and stretch if possible every 20-30 minutes. However, during long period of traveling this is usually impossible, so just stretch your muscles as much as space allows, and don’t feel bad about fidgeting. The more you move, the more you stimulate blood flow and keep your muscles from tensing up.

Sit Up Straight

When you have to be seated during your travels, try to make sure you’re sitting with good posture in a way that is keeping your back aligned. This is sometimes easier said than done, especially when you’re in a vehicle or plane. Try using a pillow or portable back support to keep your spine comfortable during your travels and prevent injury.
